Trex decking is a wood and plastic composite, made primarily from equal parts reclaimed hardwood sawdust and reclaimed/recycled polyethylene plastic such as grocery sacks and stretch film.

The proprietary Trex process is supported by patented technology and developed know-how. With field installations nearly a decade old, Trex decking and railing is a proven performer. Our national building code listing by the three major U.S. building code agencies is unequalled by any other non-wood decking alternative.

The combination of wood and plastic in Trex products offers the best of both materials. The plastic shields the wood from moisture and insect damage. The wood in the product protects the plastic from UV damage and provides additional stability and traction. The bottom line is that your customers won't have to worry about costly and time-consuming sealing, staining, or replacing damaged deck boards.

Trex Wood-Polymer® lumber is suitable for a wide range of uses such as decking, railing and landscaping. Trex Wood-Polymer lumber is not intended for primary structural members such as load bearing columns, joists, stringers and beams. In most installations, a span of 16" on center using a minimum of 3 joists will provide excellent results.

Using Trex railing elements gives you tremendous flexibility in designing your railing system. The easy care nature of Trex decking and its design attributes mean you have more options for adding your own "signature" to a deck. Whether its with a unique herringbone pattern, a splinter-free pool surround, a hot tub enclosure, a custom routed design on the top rail, or a curved railing system, Trex decking gives you more options without the splitting, warping or splintering of wood.

Railing Systems

Trex "The DECK of a Lifetime®" is an excellent choice not only for the decking surface but also for the rail system. Railings are typically the highest maintenance part of a deck, and who wouldn't want an easy care railing system? Along with the easy care nature of Trex decking, having a splinter-free handrail is a great reason to use Trex components for the deck railing

With the introduction of the Trex RailPost™ into the family of Trex products, you can now construct an all-Trex deck and railing system. The Trex RailPost is designed and code listed as a railing member only, not for use as a structural support of the deck itself.

Using a Trex RailPost in your railing systems provides a complete deck that is easy to care for. To insure you have the correct Trex product, look for the Trex RailPost marking on the end tags and on the product itself. If the product is not marked as a Trex RailPost, do not use it as a railing member!

Trex decking readily accepts paint or stain though neither is required for protection. In general, paints or stains which adhere well to wood will adhere as well or better to Trex decking. Quality latex paints (water based) or solid color stains are recommended. Stain and paint applications should be applied according to the manufacturers instructions after the Trex decking fading process is complete.

Trex decking has a fully-transferable limited warranty unmatched by competitive materials. The Trex decking limited warranty offers coverage against material defects in workmanship and materials, and against splintering, splitting, checking, rot, decay and termite damage, for a full 10 years. The total life expectancy for Trex decking is currently undetermined.

All Trex products ship from the factory in shades of brown. Because of Trex decking's wood content, color shifts do occur. Eight to twelve weeks of exposure to sunlight and rain are typically required for Trex decking to achieve its faded color. This process is completely harmless to Trex decking and does not affect its durability.

A Note on Weathering:

Because Trex contains natural wood fiber, slight fading will occur with exposure to sunlight and moisture. Trex decking reaches its weathered color after 8-12 weeks. This is normal and gives each Trex deck a distinctive look and character.

Trex Decking v. Wood v. Plastic
Trex decking is the smart alternative to wood or plastic. Because of its composition, Trex decking combines many of the best characteristics of both wood and plastic.
